Euronews Albania has obtained the list of 26 political parties that have submitted their registration requests to the Central Election Commission (CEC) for the May 11, 2025, parliamentary elections in Albania.

Among these parties are the three major ones: the Socialist Party (PS), the Democratic Party of Albania (PDSH/PD), and the Freedom Party (PL).

However, the absence of Lulzim Basha’s Euro-Atlantic Democrats and Enkelejd Alibeaj’s “Djathtas 1912” party is notable.

According to Albania’s Electoral Code, every political party must submit a registration request to the CEC no later than 70 days before election day.

This request must include information about the party leader authorized to present candidates, the official party name and acronym, a specimen of the official seal, and contact details for the financial and communication officers.

Political Developments Ahead of Elections

On September 24, 2024, representatives of the Democratic Party began consultations with alliesfor the upcoming elections. The first meeting was with Ilir Meta from the Freedom Party.

Meta did not take a clear stance on whether he would run with a joint electoral list or separately but expressed a preference for using his party’s logo.

On November 14, 2024, Democratic Party leader Sali Berisha, who has been under house arrest since December 2023, addressed concerns regarding Meta’s inclusion in the electoral list despite Meta’s imprisonment in October 2024.

Berisha emphasized that Meta, whom he claims is imprisoned without clear charges, would be included in the electoral list if his party joined the coalition.
